Q&A with Joy A Tekobo, Founder of Covenant Health Pharmacy
T.H.R.I.V.E. Participant Interviews
POSTED: 2 August 2022
I decided to become an entrepreneur because I have a high tolerance for risk, and I am an optimist. I knew the process of navigating the challenges along the path would afford me personal growth. Getting a job for me would be settling for less than my potential. Finally, entrepreneurship is an outlet for my deep passion for the pharmacy profession. It has created opportunities to positively impact the lives of customers and associates.
Covenant Health Pharmacy started operations in 2014.
I have a true passion for helping Seniors solve medication therapy problems. Many seniors, who have multiple chronic conditions experience gaps in their pharmaceutical care due to the lack of communication between their healthcare providers and the multiple pharmacies they use. We wanted to solve that problem, especially for those patients receiving palliative and hospice care, while at the same time, create an environment that offered me both freedom, flexibility, and job satisfaction.
True success for me involves the opportunity to give back to my community especially in terms of job creation and infrastructure, as well as helping others achieve their potential. Contributing to, and having an impact in the effort to solve many of the drug therapy problems the pharmacy and medical industry faces today would be on my list of successes as well.
If you were speaking to a room full of new business owners or aspiring entrepreneurs in your industry, what piece of advice would you share to help them be successful? The advice I would give to a room full of new business owners is the importance of having the spirit of persistence and the need to become a lifelong learner, especially with respect to business principles. I would also pass on the notion that they shouldn’t sacrifice those important relationships in their life for the sake of business, if they do, any success they achieve may be end up being meaningless. Lastly, I would tell them to adopt a healthy lifestyle so they can enjoy the benefits of their hard work.
Thankfully, the pandemic has had a positive effect on our business As an independent community pharmacy, we gave and still give hundreds of COVID vaccines and performed numerous diagnostic tests. The pandemic has highlighted the important and critical role independent community pharmacies play in the healthcare system.
My top three values as a business owner are: establishing boundaries, having, and displaying integrity, and leading with excellence.
In the coming months and years, we will be focusing on introducing new services, opening several new locations, and increasing brand awareness.
I hope to gain from the SBA T.H.R.I.V.E. the knowledge and skill set needed to significantly scale my business; the opportunity to create long lasting relationships and the chance to pass on what I learn to other business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs – to be a blessing to others.
